The Mission’s Life Change Recovery Program includes Work Therapy, in which residents work at the Mission’s Thrift Store and do other jobs as needed around the Mission.

JSRM Pre-Program

The Jersey Shore Rescue Mission Life Change program works in concert with Market Street Mission, our parent mission in Morristown, NJ. Men who would like to become a part of the Market Street Mission Life Change Program can begin the Pre-Program phase at Jersey Shore Rescue Mission. This is especially helpful for men who come through the JSRM Emergency Services Shelter or are referred by hospitals, detox facilities and other agencies in the area. In 2018, 19 of the 44 men who graduated from Market Street Mission began at JSRM.  The overall theme of the Life Change Program can be found in II Corinthians 5:17, “Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; old things have passed away; behold, all things have become new.”

The JSRM Pre-Program is 2 months long and is designed to determine if a man can benefit from the complete life change program, provide him necessary information for a decision and begin the process of assimilation. During this time, the mission provides everything the resident needs: meals, a bed in the life change dorm, clothing and medical evaluation at a local clinic. He is assigned basic chores as part of the mission community as well as a work-therapy assignment in one of the following areas: Thrift Store, maintenance, laundry, kitchen or general house man. The men also assist in our Welcome Room and setting up the shelter beds.

Counseling begins with a Bio-Psychosocial Assessment and  then continues on a weekly basis for the remainder of his stay at the mission. The resident also attends morning devotions, Bible Studies, daily chapel services, church and in-house AA/NA meetings. He becomes acquainted with the routines and procedures at the Mission, and the Mission staff and residents try to evaluate him to see if he is appropriate for the program. If the JSRM staff determine he is a good fit for the Life Change Program, he is transferred to Market Street Mission.

Relapse Prevention Program

The Jersey Shore Rescue Mission Relapse Prevention Program is designed to assist mission graduates who have relapsed into addiction or homelessness. The program is approximately 2 months long and includes many of the elements of pre-program with the addition of relapse-prevention specific counseling and the requirement to find and work with a 12-step sponsor. If the resident successfully completes the Relapse Prevention program, he is eligible to stay up to an additional 2 months for “transition.” During this phase, the resident continues to be accountable to the mission for curfew, counseling, AA/NA meetings, sponsor contact, Bible Study and church attendance while working and saving money. Following transition, many of the men move into local sober houses or return home.

Mission Internship Program

Men who complete the Market Street Mission Life Change Program may be invited to become a Mission Intern. The mission internship is built on 2 Timothy 2:2 – “what you have heard from me in the presence of many witnesses entrust to faithful men, who will be able to teach others also.” Having completed the life change program, mission interns are equipped and entrusted to carry the message of the gospel of hope to those coming to us for help.

Following graduation, training for the internship begins at the Jersey Shore Rescue Mission, where the interns assist staff with most of the vital mission functions: emergency shelter and other emergency services, life change program, maintenance and thrift store. In return, the mission continues to work with the interns on key areas of their life: Family and other relationships, discipleship and church involvement, career and educational goals, 12 step recovery involvement, and legal and medical issues. The internship also provides continued accountability, structure, housing, individual counseling and training for those who participate. The program can last up to two years following graduation.
